Engine wear is the process where the metallic parts of an engine have had microscopic damage to full blown gouges, divots and grooves occur. Most engine wear occurs over the life of the operation of the engine, however slight engine wear can occur at startup of the engine. Lubrication forms a barrier and preventative solution to engine wear by adding a chemically resistant substance to the heat and pressure experienced in engine operation.
